Hệ Lụy – Obsession

A souvenir: Trinh Cong Son, a main artist, poet-musician of Vietnam, has painted this canvas very late one night in December 1998. He has just finished with me a half-bottle of Johny Walker-black label. It was about the time when his body could not stand it almost anymore, but he could not stop craving for his nightly strong drinks. The common problem of vietnamese artists who spent most of their lives with the historical upheavals of our country, the deadly division of the country into two parts The North and the South, and the gloomy present time of the general Marxist revolution, which does not allow a complete freedom in artistic creation.

Trinh Cong Son turned out in fact to be a good painter. The following is what I’ve written once about his art, on the occasion of an exhibition of his paintings, exhibition in common with some of his friends, artists-painters (circa 1990).

Our musician-poet Trinh Cong Son has decided to take up his brushes and to pursue by means of colors his artistic creation. Right away, he turns out to be the peer of established painters-artists in Vietnam. Just like his music with its moving litany, his writings with their simple bewildering poetry, his paintings are spare and through each canvas, express just an idea, a nostalgia or an aspiration…Across the torments of the Vietnamese recent history, across the upheavals of our lives, with our losses, our sorrows, the ravages of the war in ourselves and in our society, Trinh Cong Son has given so much of his soul, so that we as Vietnamese might have some emotional stability, some conviction in our own survival with our thrust for love and for human brotherhood. The canvases of Trinh Cong Son are of simplified design, of natural colors. They are abstract. They are serene. The shining expression of a man who has accomplished his historical mission, and who aspires now to continue his work in a certain silence, a certain contemplation, but with a sentiment -oh! how princely- of frailties and of fallibility. 2009 - Ngo Van Tao

Un souvenir: Trinh Cong Son, notre musicien-poète, a peint ce tableau “Obsession” une nuit de Decembre 1998, après avoir bu avec moi la moitié d’une bouteille de Johny Walker Black label. Son corps avait dejà des signes de faiblesse, mais il ne pouvait pas quitter cette habitude d’avoir quelques verres d’alcool bien tard dans la nuit. Le péché commun de bien des artistes que je connaissais à Saigon et à Hanoi! Eux qui vivaient une grande partie de leur vie dans le dechirement de la guerre fratricide et qui vivaient le temps toujours présent de la révolution marxiste qui ne permettait qu’une relative liberté dans la création artistique.

Suivante est la traduction française du petit texte que j’ai écrit en anglais vers l’année 1990 à l’occasion d’une exposition de peintures que Trinh Cong Son a réalisée en commun avec un certain nombre de ses amis-artistes.

Notre musicien, notre poète Trinh Cong Son a décidé de prendre les pinceaux et de par les couleurs poursuivre son chemin d’artiste. D’emblée il se retrouve parmi les peintres bien connus du Vietnam. Comme sa musique à la litanie émouvante, comme ses écrits à la poésie simple et bouleversante, sa peinture est dépouillée et par chacun de ses tableaux, n’est que l’expression d’une idée, d’une nostalgie ou d’une aspiration…A travers les tourments de l’histoire du Vietnam, à travers les bouleversements dus à la guerre dans notre vie et dans notre société, Trinh Cong Son a tant donné de lui-même (de son âme) pour que nous, en tant que Vietnamiens, ayons une stabilité émotionnelle, une conviction dans notre survie, avec notre soif de l’amour et de sentiments humains.Les tableaux de Trinh Cong Son sont à dessin simplifié, aux couleurs naturelles. Ils sont abstraits. Ils sont sereins. L’expression rayonnante, reposante de l’homme qui a accompli sa mission historique, qui aspire maintenant à continuer son oeuvre dans un certain silence, dans une certaine contemplation et avec un sentiment -oh,combien princier- de sa fragilité et de sa faillibilité.

Hồi tưởng : Bức họa trên “Hệ Lụy”, Trịnh Công Sơn vẽ tặng tôi một đêm tháng 12 năm 1998. Trịnh Công Sơn vẽ sau khi đã uống cùng tôi đến nửa trai Johny-Walker black label. Chính đó là hệ lụy mà TCS không từ bỏ được, dù thân thể anh đã có triệu chứng suy giảm nhiều vì những ly rượu nóng bỏng. Nhưng thật cũng là hệ lụy của chung cho rất nhiều văn nghệ sĩ mà tôi biết. Những người nghệ sĩ đã quá đau khổ sống qua cuộc chiến tranh tương tàn của đất nước và nay phải sống cuộc cách mạng toàn diện xã hội chủ nghĩa, với đường lối khắt khe chỉ đạo ngay trong nghệ thuật.

Sau đây là mấy câu tôi viết bàn về Trịnh Công Sơn họa sĩ nhân dịp anh triển lãm tranh của mình, cuộc triển lãm chung với một số bạn bè nghệ sĩ vào khoảng năm 1990.

Trịnh Công Sơn, nhạc sĩ, nhà thơ, đã cầm cọ lên để vẽ và “tiếp tục cuộc chơi” trong màu sắc. Đương nhiên anh đã là bạn cùng giai tầng với những họa sĩ có tên tuổi trong xã hội. Như những ca khúc của anh với khúc điệu vô hạn chuyển tình, như những sáng tác của anh với những lời thơ bình dị nhưng chấn động lòng người, tranh sơn dầu của Trịnh Công Sơn không phức tạp, từng bức một gợi thuần nhất một ý, một hoài niệm hay một ước mong…Qua giông tố lịch sử của đất nước, qua đổ vỡ trong cuộc sống của mỗi người với tang tóc chiến tranh, qua những cấu xé của chính mình và của xã hội mình, Trịnh Công Sơn đã cống hiến cho chúng ta rất nhiều - từng mảnh hồn của anh - để chúng ta, những người Việt nam, có một chút thăng bằng trong cảm nghĩ, có một chút thành khẩn khi chúng ta đã biết tồn tại, khi chúng ta vẫn khát khao tình yêu và tình người. Những bức tranh sơn dầu của Trịnh Công Sơn là những nét vẽ cô động, những mảng màu đơn sắc. Trừu tượng. Viên tĩnh. Tiếng nói có ánh lửa của một người đã làm tròn một sứ mạng lịch sử, nay muốn tiếp tục sáng tác trong yên lặng, trong thiền tĩnh, cùng với một trực giác - ôi, bao nhiêu là trang trọng - rằng tất cả đều mong manh và hạn định.
